Showing at 528 Cherry Alley, Hudson
These sculptural porcelain vases convey the idea of spontaneous motion. Graceful and serene, the vessels unfurl with a sense of inevitability. The surface designs are a result of exploring the Nerikomi technique of coloring clay in batches, then wedging it together to form unpredictable patterns that are then covered with a clear glaze.
After years of making representational forms, I changed course and began riffing on the vase with hand built, slab constructed porcelain. Incorporating chance and randomness into the work has yielded less predictable results and more exciting firings.
