Steven Careau is a sculptor whose wall-mounted wood-and-metal pieces, characterized by clean lines and precise geometry, explore the boundaries between two- and three-dimensionality, randomness and fixity, and materiality and immateriality.
He began making art in Québec, Canada, in the late 1970s, bending and carving wood to create curvilinear forms and naturalistic imagery. He had several solo shows in Montréal before returning to the United States to attend Bard College, where he received his MFA in 1991. He is represented by Thompson Giroux Gallery in Chatham, New York.
